Gift as a gift

There are less than three weeks til Christmas and the tedious process of thinking up unique gifts for loved ones is probably well underway for many. I for one am in yet another bind whereby most gift I do think of I’ve given before, seems really dull and forced or will probably be totally useless to the recipient of the gift.

I doubt that I am not alone when it comes to not knowing what to give in a time of giving. However, I now feel like there is something useful I can give someone and I know it will be useful to the recipient.

Ever thought about buying someone a goat? What about a duck, chicken or baby fish? How about something like bee keeping or carpentry training? A boat, fruit tree or clean water for a school perhaps?

No? Well now you can!

Believe it not, the nature of worldwide not-for-profit organisations such as Oxfam Australia now allows us to make a more specific donation to those less fortunate around the world.

In a nutshell, the idea is to “help you give something special to your friends or family and give something extra special to people who haven’t got much at all.” (Oxfam, 2006)

Oxfam Australia, one of Australia’s most recognised and respected not-for-profit groups, is doing their best to make a combination of donating and giving gifts as simple as possible for your average gift-giver like you and me.

By providing us with the opportunity to do our bit to contribute to the better quality of lives in the 26 countries around the world that Oxfam Australia currently work in, we can not only give our loved ones a gift but we can help others live a healthier, happier life too.

It may not feel like much, but little is better than nothing at all. For example, you may not think much of a single goat worth A$39, but it is a wise investment choice for communities in Sri Lanka where they become a source of income with the potential to breed quickly. Before you know it, this community may end up with a herd!

OK so the recipient of the physical object or product might not be the actual person you’re giving the gift to, but if both the giver and the receiver have a heart, then I’m sure both parties won’t mind too much that the beneficiary of this gift is someone who is probably less fortunate than themselves.

So, if you’re sick of giving socks, random toiletries and other token gifts, why not give a gift as a gift?
